Arrive in Nelson the night before. After breakfast I pick you up and
we drive 1.5 hours to Creston. Very pretty ride over the highest
paved mountain pass in Canada.
The ride from Creston to Crawford Bay is along Kootenay Lake. The
terrain is varied with lots of short steep hills and great views.
Not a flat ride but very scenic.
Crawford Bay has a great artisan community with glass blowers,
potters, weavers, broom maker and more. It is the proud home of the
Harry Potter nimbus 2000 broom.
The second morning we have a steep hill to climb before heading down
to catch the Kootenay Lake ferry. Claims to be the longest free
ferry in Canada. Approx a 40 minute ride. After which we head for
the small town of Kaslo. Home of the HMS Moyie a paddle wheeler
turned into a museum. This is one of the prettiest towns in British
Columbia. (that's my opinion)
The next morning we head over a pass to the Slocan Valley. The road
we are on is mostly built on the old rail grade and is between 0 and
4% grade. Most of this section of road has been recently paved, has
little traffic and is a spectacular ride. Once over the pass we head
into New Denver another small former mining town, then on to yet
another small town of Silverton on 5 km from New Denver..
After Silverton we climb a challenging 6 mile climb to a great view
point of Slocan Lake. After that it's on to Lemon Creek Lodge just
past Slocan City for the night.
This day starts with a great breakfast at Lemon Creek Lodge before
heading down the Valley to Crescent Valley at which time we turn off
the main highway and take a less traveled route into Castlegar. One
of my most favorite rides. (quiet, scenic, rolling)
Last day. Today we have a variety of options to get back to Nelson.
Options include more hills, (route through Blewett. Fast, along the
main highway. Long/hilly (more miles) 82 km over a major
mountain pass and through Salmo. This route is not recommended..
Depending on what the group wants. Most go for the hills and the
road less traveled, through Blewett and down into Nelson. The
Blewett route makes for a great way to end the ride.
