Salmo to Nelson on the
Burlington Northern Railway (48 km/30 miles). This ride takes you
into remote spectacular wilderness where wild animals abound. The ride can
either start in Salmo or Nelson depending on the preference of where the
group would like to finish their ride. The abandoned rail line takes the
riders over trestles and past mountain lakes rich in heritage and natural
beauty. The valley between Salmo and Nelson has an extremely rich mining
history. Abandoned mine sites can still be seen on the mountain side. Six
miles from Salmo (home to numerous large stone murals) is the small
community of Ymir once a bustling mining community and a great place to
visit. the general store and Pub is like stepping into the past. The rail line
follows the Salmo River for most of the route, which is home to moose,
herons, and other wild animals. With grades no more than 4% it is an ideal
bike path. Mountain bikes or hybrid bikes with front shocks make for an
enjoyable day.
Included in this trip is lunch, transportation from Nelson, two guides, and a whole lot of local
knowledge.
